Point-to-Point Wireless Broadband Access

Elcom designs, manufactures and markets digital frequency synthesizers incorporated into digital relay radio systems (DRRSs) that provide wireless links between pairs of points on a broadband network. The radio systems that Elcom's customers manufacture are used to provide "the last mile" of network access for large corporations and other organizations requiring extremely high bandwidth, and to bridge gaps in carrier networks, including Synchronous Optical Network (Sonet) rings.

The synthesizers fall into the high-capacity segment of the market, providing data rates of 155 Mbps or more, and represent a new generation known as "microwave fiber" or "fiber air". They provide wireless connections at fiber-optic speeds with levels of reliability and error correction that previously could only be provided through physical fiber optic links.

Elcom's single module synthesizers employ proprietary zero phase hits technology to eliminate phase hits and phase pops and they are ultra-low microphonics, which are essential in providing fiber-like quality for wireless links under changing environmental conditions such as wind, rain and temperature extremes.

Multi-point Wireless Broadband Access

Elcom designs, manufactures and markets oscillators used in systems for providing wireless broadband access to the Internet and other shared networks - LMDS (Local Multi-point Distribution System) and MMDS (Multi-channel Multi-point Distribution System). LMDS and MMDS connect a base station with as many as 1,000 transceivers, each of which provides an apartment building, a small-to-medium-sized business, or a similar location with the "last mile" of broadband network access via an antenna on the top or side of a building. The base stations typically cover a range of five to 10 miles.

At data rates of up to 16 Mbps, these technologies offer access at twice the speed of DSL and the fastest upgraded cable television systems, and are easier to bring to locations that these technologies don't reach. Avoiding the time and expense of running wire lines "to the door" saves the users money and enables new carriers to speed up their time-to-market.

Elcom's phase-locked dielectric resonator oscillators (PDROs) provide a single-frequency signal source that operates from 1 GHz to 23 GHz. They are small and low microphonics. These features allow continuous operation over varying environmental conditions, such as wind, rain and temperature change.
